United States plans for Winter Olympics unchanged

United States plans for Winter Olympics unchanged

Heightened tensions on the Korea peninsula have raised safety questions about US participation.

In her current role as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley recently suggested that American athletes might not participate in the Winter Olympics in South Korea.

As the host country for the Winter Olympics, South Korea invited North Korea to the games, but it is unclear whether this will diffuse tensions following joint American-South Korean air force drills and North Korea's recent missile launch.

Haley agreed on Wednesday, saying that the situation on the Korean Peninsula is "getting more unsafe".

They've even involved the United States on occasion, and another one might be stirring for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

"Look, that wasn't exactly what the ambassador said".

The U.S. has not missed an Olympics since 1980, when it boycotted the summer games in Moscow at the behest of then-President Jimmy Carter over the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan.

The concerns appear to be over safety and the ongoing nuclear standoff with North Korea.

Haley said Wednesday that while the situation in the region has grown increasingly grave, the USA has been able to rally the "entire worldwide community", including China and Russian Federation, to put pressure on the Kim regime.

The Winter Games are slated to run February 9-25 in Pyeongchang, only some 50 miles from the North Korea border.

Addressing the strained relations and their impact on the Olympics, Ms. Haley said the Trump administration would try to "find out the best way" to protect American athletes participating in the Games.

Pyeongchang, the host city, is about 50 miles from the DMZ. Just last week, the International Olympic Committee banned Russia's Olympic team from the games as punishment for a state-backed doping program.

The confusion began when United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley, in response to a question in a Fox News interview, said "There's an open question" about whether the U.S. team would travel to South Korea, where tensions have grown high after a series of missile tests in North Korea and inflammatory rhetoric between its leader, Kim Jong-un, and U.S. President Donald Trump. "But what have we always said?" "We live our lives". We use our freedom, we have that. "And certainly that is a ideal opportunity for all of them to go and do something they have worked so hard for".
