Baby born with heart outside body survives surgery

Baby born with heart outside body survives surgery

Within 50 minutes of birth, the baby was undergoing the first of three operations to put her heart back inside the body.

She has had three operations to place her heart back in her chest.

And experts, including the consultant cardiologist, have said that they do not know of a case in the United Kingdom where a baby has survived such a condition.

Ms Findley found out her daughter may not live at nine-weeks.

Naomi said having an end was "not something she could do". "However, chances of successful surgery and long-term survival were very poor; they understood that and wanted to continue with the pregnancy".

Her parents, Naomi Findlay and Dean Wilkins, were told by doctors she may not survive, and that one option was a termination because of the high risks of serious complications.

"Regardless of what the future holds we wanted to share our story and how the team at Glenfield stood by us and fought to give her a chance of life".

"We can help with certain cares like eyes and mouth".

Although they haven't yet managed to cuddle their baby, they know that day will come. "While there are cases of surgical fix, this remains a very serious condition with a low chance of survival". "I burst into tears".

"All the way through it, it was "the chances of survival are next to none, the only option is to terminate, we can offer counselling" and things like that".

"In the end I just said that termination is not an option for me, if it was to happen naturally then so be it".

Explaining what it felt like after the birth, the 31-year-old said: 'I started to panic, I actually felt physically sick because I actually thought there was a big possibility I wouldn't be able to see her or hear her, or anything really. We just had a little cry.

"We know this is going to be a roller coaster and have started to prepare ourselves for the hard times ahead, but we needed to give her a chance, and the team here have done that", Wilkins said.

The couple said they were told the first 10 minutes after birth were crucial as her ability to breathe would be essential.

"The chances of survival were next to none - no-one believed she was going to make it except us", Wilkins said.

After Vanellope was born by Caesarian section (and cried!), she was wrapped in a sterile plastic bag, quickly shown to her parents and then rushed into an anaesthetic room, where she received a breathing tube and saline solution dripped on her heart.

East Midlands Congenital Heart Centre lead surgeon Branko Mimic said: 'Cases such as Vanellope's, where everything else appears essentially normal, are even rarer, and whilst therefore it would seem more hopeful she will do well, it is therefore nearly impossible to be confident of this'.

"I don't even know where to begin".
