Consuming Tea Reduces the Risk of Glaucoma

The new findings show that lifestyle changes could help prevent vision loss from glaucoma, lead study author Anne Coleman of the University of California, Los Angeles, was quoted as saying by Live Science.

The current study analyzed data from the 2005-06 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) in the United States, a nationally representative annual survey that enrolled almost 10, 000 people.

The research, published online in the British Journal of Ophthalmology, compared people who consumed tea and those who did not, and noted that those who consumed tea at least once a day had lower risk of Glaucoma than those who did not drink tea.

"No study to date has compared the effects of caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee, tea, and soft drinks on glaucoma", write the researchers. Frequency of a diagnosis of glaucoma in individuals who consume coffee, tea and/or soft drinks. The nationally representative annual survey of several U.S. adults and children is based on interviews, physical examinations, and blood samples of all the participants. Among the 1678 participants who had full eye test results, including photos, 84 (5%) adults had developed the condition.

Tea-drinkers were 74% less likely to develop the eye disease, according to which study looked at the eyesight and food and drink habits of 1,678 people in America.

Tea lovers, rejoice. A cup of hot tea a day can keep glaucoma (blindness) away. However, the association was not significant for decaffeinated hot tea and glaucoma. The study group was relatively small, and the information on when glaucoma had been diagnosed was also unavailable.

Consuming Tea Reduces the Risk of Glaucoma

Your morning cup of tea may have more power than you thought.

Those benefits may include a reduced risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

Thus, the researchers suggest, it wouldn't be so far-fetched to consider that the consumption of tea could have a protective metabolic effect. How much you have to drink daily?.

That being said, the researchers accept that there are limitations in the study including a lack of data on the type of tea drunk, possible errors in diagnosis and the fact that very few participants had glaucoma.

Professor Chris Hammond of King's College London, said: "These results are interesting and add to the increasing consensus that tea contains antioxidants and other compounds that are good for our health".
