ND Health Department reporting widespread flu activity

The bulk are in the Phoenix metro area, but Coconino County also reports an increase this year with 77 confirmed cases. Every year, more than 200,000 people in the US are hospitalized for flu-related complications and about 36,000 die as a result of the illness. The following week, that number more than doubled to 140 positive cases.

As I said, I didn't give it all that much thought in the past since it seems to be one of those unavoidable seasonal cycles.

Bloomington-Normal schools and hospitals are already reporting an uptick in cold and flu activity, even before holiday travelers spread more germs around.

The Department of Public Health and El Paso Fire Department held a vaccine clinic on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at the EPFD's Safety and Health Outreach Center, 5415 Trowbridge Drive.

"We in public health like to say stay home, keep it to yourself, don't share with others". Influenza affects millions across the United States each year. Limiting the spread of flu helps the entire community, including employers.

Increased activity for the flu began earlier this season than usual in Kentucky and is expected to continue for several months.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends yearly flu vaccinations for everyone over the age of six months, although there are rare exceptions.

For two and three-year-old children the vaccine - which is a quick, safe and completely pain-free nasal spray - will be given at their local GP surgery. In comparison, there were 87 cases of the flu reported at this time a year ago. They say that's why vaccines "wear off" instead of giving lifetime immunity from the very strains people are inoculated with. Opponents say the potential for complications does not make the risk worthwhile.

"There's no single virus that causes the flu and there is no one shot that protects against all of them", said an MCMC nurse.

The issues involving vaccinations, for the flu or other illnesses, are complex and boil down to personal choice, say opponents of MCMC's policy. "So if you're traveling to another part of the USA where there's a flu outbreak, the close proximity to people will contribute to the virus being transmitted". This will help you recover, but it will also lower the chances of making others sick.
