Padmavati Gets Censor Board Clearance With Riders, to be Renamed 'Padmavat'

Padmavati Gets Censor Board Clearance With Riders, to be Renamed 'Padmavat'

There were reports doing the rounds that the board had suggested 26 cuts to the film, but in a statement, Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) chairman Prasoon Joshi clarified that they have only advised five modifications, including the title change, but "no cuts".

After heated controversies before Gujarat elections, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has finally chose to give a go-ahead to Sanjay Leela Bansali directed film "Padmavati" - with a U/A certificate.

Other key changes in the movie are of the disclaimers, one of which is regarding not glorifying the practice of Sati.

Hindu groups and a Rajput caste organisation allege that the movie, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, depicts an intimate romantic scene between the two characters, although the producers of the film deny this. They chose to form a panel of historians, consisting of Shri Arvind Singh from Udaipur, Dr. Chandramani Singh and Prof K.K. Singh of the Jaipur University.

CBFC sources say that the title will be changed from "Padmavati" to "Padmavat" and at least three different disclaimers have to be added during the course of the film, sources say.

The group also held protests against the film in several states and Rajput community members have burned effigies of Bhansali.

The censor board further admitted, "The film was approached with balanced view keeping in mind both the filmmakers & society".

Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi, chief of the Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena, warned of a violent stir if the film was released. This film was sidelined by CBFC and it raises the question on the Censor Board.

The CBFC's suggestions were also slammed by a Mewar royal, who expressed his disappointment in a letter to Joshi. He had said that Deepika's character does not share screen space with the character of Allauddin Khilji's character, portrayed by Ranveer Singh.

"Disgusted by the open and blatant use of political muscle to screw filmmakers during elections".

The second objection is to Padmavati performing the "Ghoomar" dance in a darbar which they said is an affront to the Rajput culture as no queen or princess would ever dance in a durbar.
