Customs Computer Outage Creates Delays For Arriving Passengers At Kennedy Airport

Customs Computer Outage Creates Delays For Arriving Passengers At Kennedy Airport

The system went down at about 7:30 p.m. and came back online at about 9:30 p.m., customs and border protection spokeswoman Jennifer Gabris said.

Photos posted on social networks by stranded passengers showed long lines at New York's JFK and Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson. It left hundreds of folks stuck in lines for a couple of hours in a part of the airport where there's normally not a lot to do.

Worldwide passengers arriving at T.F. Green Airport were also affected by the outage, but the disruption was temporary and the system is back online.

"CBP took immediate action to address the technology disruption", the CBP added.

"At this time, there is no indication the service disruption was malicious in nature", the agency said.

The agency reported that it still had access to national security-related databases during the disruption, and all travelers were screened according to security standards. All airports were back on line after wait times for travelers that were longer than usual, it said. Agents were still able to process passengers using an alternative system, albeit at a much slower rate.

During the outage, "alternative procedures" were used to process worldwide passengers, according to the agency.
