Hoda Kotb named co-anchor of 'Today' show, replacing Matt Lauer

Hoda Kotb named co-anchor of 'Today' show, replacing Matt Lauer

The new year means a new job for Hoda Kotb, who on Tuesday was officially named the new co-anchor of the "Today" show on NBC alongside Savannah Guthrie.

"Sounds like you want a steak, not an anchor", Roker commented, quoting the tweet in question.

Kotb had filled in temporarily until Tuesday's announcement made the move permanent.

Interestingly, Hoda Kotb's new position as co-anchor will not immediately take her away from the 10:00 a.m. hour, where she sits alongside Kathie Lee Gifford.

"This has to be the most popular decision NBC News has ever made", Guthrie said while celebrating the news on Tuesday's "Today".

The pairing of two women is a departure from the typical man-and-woman morning show format.

And Kotb responded: "There's no one I'd rather be sitting next to in 2018 than you".

In addition, she apparently has "quickly hit the ground running", according to NBC News Chairman Andrew Lack in a statement.

Kotb posted her reaction on Twitter.

"I am pinching myself", Kotb, who said she was offered the role over the holidays, replied.

Hoda Kotb has taken over Matt Lauer's role as co-anchor of "Today", just over one month after the longtime host was sacked from his post at the morning show for "inappropriate sexual behavior".

Kotb, in turn, joked that "we should send some medics to Alexandria, Virginia, where my mom has likely fainted after hearing the opening of that show". She's subbed for Lauer since the day he was sacked and Today has won four straight weeks in the ratings, after having spent much of the past few years in second behind ABC.

Kotb was a news anchor and reporter for New Orleans' WWL TV from 1992 to 1998 before joining NBC News as a correspondent for "Dateline".

"They have an undeniable connection with each other and most importantly, with viewers, a hallmark of TODAY", the email said, adding that Kotb was "remarkable". Indeed, Kotb is a beloved figure, and her presence will be warmly regarded (although perhaps not quite to the degree as an Ann Curry return would have been, yet Curry's probably no longer interested).

Lauer's eventual replacement had always been the subject of internal angst but with a sudden decision forced upon the network, Kotb's performance made it easier. The timing is important for NBC, because Today will get a burst of attention next month with the Winter Olympics.
