Live updates as Storm Eleanor batters Co Armagh

Live updates as Storm Eleanor batters Co Armagh

The warning was issued at 5am today and is in place until 9pm, although this may be altered as the storm progresses.

There's a warning of potential coastal flooding in Clare later, as storm Eleanor bares down on the county. This indicates that flooding is expected, and that "immediate action" is required.

The weather warning in place for Co Armagh has been upgraded from yellow to the more severe amber.

The west coast is most likely to be affected, with a combination of high tides and strong winds producing large waves and spray.

"The peak tide will be at midnight tonight, and we have had our teams out clear grids and gullies in preparation for the rain". They will continue to monitor the situation and issue Flood Alerts should the need arise.

Video from Galway show the city's docks flooded, streets under water and even people driving along the seafront as huge waves endanger their vehicle.

"We advise the public to take extreme care on coastal paths and promenades and not to put yourself in unnecessary danger trying to take "storm selfies". Properties may flood and there may be travel disruption. Temperatures in the afternoon will be 7 to 9 degrees and will feel much colder in the strong westerly winds. This is in effect from 7.30pm until 4am tomorrow.

The Chief Forecaster said: "A swathe of strengthening winds is expected to affect England and Wales, arriving in the west initially, before pushing eastwards during the early hours of Wednesday".
