Apple: Mac and iPhone both affected by big chip vulnerability

Apple: Mac and iPhone both affected by big chip vulnerability

Just hours after a computer chip flaw exposed majority of smartphones, computers, cloud storage, tablets and laptops to malicious activities, Apple today admitted that all of its iPhones, iPads and computers have been affected by the processor flaw, which could leave it vulnerable to hackers.

There is no evidence that the flaws - which affect computer processors built by Intel and ARM - have been exploited by hackers, though companies including Microsoft have been working to provide fixes. "As it is not easy to fix, it will haunt us for quite some time", the researchers said, explaining why they chose to call the flaw Spectre.

According to Intel, Krzanich's divestments were unrelated to the security flaws. Researchers with Alphabet's Google ProjectZero, in conjunction with academic and industry researchers from several countries, discovered two flaws.

The Apple Watch isn't impacted by the Meltdown flaw. The second, called Spectre, affects chips from Intel, AMD and ARM and lets hackers potentially trick otherwise error-free applications into giving up secret information.

Google and Microsoft have already issued statements telling users which products are affected by the bugs.

Your antivirus app might might be preventing you from receiving the patch from Windows Update. Then Google's Project Zero team, which tracks down zero-day vulnerabilities on computer systems, reported that the flaw impacts almost all modern processors.

However, there are now no known attacks that have exploited these flaws, according to the Google researchers.

Intel products are said to be especially vulnerable, but the company issued a statement dismissing as inaccurate reports that the problem was unique to its products.

Advice from the U.S Computer Emergency Readiness Team's was grim.

The company has said that it will release a patch to protect its browser, Safari, against Spectre. The company also downplayed concerns about slowed performance, noting that for the "average computer user" the impact should not be significant and will lessen over time. However, they would require access to the machine before being able to steal information from the computer.

It's something no one had realized was an issue for 20-some years. Google said its users of Android phones - more than 80 percent of the global market - were protected if they had the latest security updates. Gmail users do not need to take any additional action to protect themselves, but users of its Chromebooks, Chrome web browser and users of Google Cloud services who have installed their own operating systems will need to install updates. In each case, an attacker can run code on an affected processor which leaks information stored in the computer's memory.

Spectre and Meltdown, two flaws in the basic building blocks of billions of computing devices, are haunting the internet.
