Rare 'blue supermoon' total eclipse to occur in Singapore on 31 January

Rare 'blue supermoon' total eclipse to occur in Singapore on 31 January

India's Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft is scheduled to launch in March-that nation's first attempt at a landing mission, with a stationary lander and a rover created to last two weeks (one lunar day) on the surface. That's a blood moon, a blue moon, and a supermoon all at once.

A full moon, known as the Blue Moon is seen over Loosely Row, near Princes Risborough, southeast England, July 31, 2015.

The first full moon for this year happened last January 2, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.

Mark the date, the blood moon or blue supermoon is coming in a rare lunar event which happens only every 150 years. While the saying "once in a blue moon" suggests rarity, these events are more common than you might think. This year, they want to take two more big steps toward reaching that goal with the Chang'e 4 project, two satellites that are now expected to launch later this year. Such occurrence was last reported on March 31, 1866. It has also been dubbed as the "wolf moon". A few tidbits of the supermoon were shared by the American space agency NASA on Twitter.

A supermoon - a term coined by astrologer Richard Nolle - is a phenomenon that occurs when a full moon coincides with the moon being the closest it gets to the Earth on its orbit. But before that spacecraft takes off, China needs to send a communications satellite to hang out above the far side of the Moon and pass signals back to Earth, which could happen as early as June. The perigee is the nearest point to Earth in the lunar orbit.

China Chang'e 4 mission in 2018 will be first ever to explore far side of moon

First, it's a Supermoon, meaning that it will appear larger and as much as 30 per cent brighter than normal.

The super blue blood moon is not expected to shine as quite brightly as the moon on New Year's Day, but it will offer something better instead-the red glow of a total lunar eclipse.

On January 31, some U.S-based stargazers will also be treated to a total lunar eclipse. During an eclipse, the typical bluish hues reflected by the moon get filtered away. The "blood moon" is named for this color.

To the east, Alaska, Hawaii and northwestern Canada will see the eclipse from start to finish. For the rest of the mainland US, the eclipse will be partial.

The phrase "once in a blue moon" - meaning something that does not happen very often - impresses how infrequent this event is. "But it's another great chance to watch the moon".
