Amazon readies bid for Premier League streaming rights

Amazon readies bid for Premier League streaming rights

Amazon will face particularly stiff competition from Sky this time around however.

This isn't the first athletic venture the retailer has entered as it inked deals to stream Thursday night National Football League games, as well as ATP tennis matches.

Amazon looks increasing likely to bid for Premier League streaming rights in the United Kingdom, accordng to Richard Broughton, Research Director at Ampere Analysis.

It would mean a bumper payday for the Premier League - who raked in more than £8billion from their last domestic and global TV rights auctions - as the Silicon Valley titans have billions to invest. There are seven packages that broadcasters can bid for.

The last BT and Sky deal, inked in 2015, covered 168 live games per season for a three-season price of £5.14 billion and has seen an explosion in the finances available to top-tier clubs.

Richard Broughton, Research Director at Ampere Analysis, said it is very likely that the company will bid for the EPL rights. The English Football Association is said to be opening up bids for broadcasting rights in February, and the report claims that Amazon could be considering making a bid for it. The following month, Facebook reached a deal with Univision and MLS to stream at least 22 games.

'We think they could afford to buy one or even two packages without having to charge more for an Amazon Prime subscription because the extra customers would pay for it. Early moves from Amazon will likely fuel speculation of a challenge to the two companies.

So what does an online giant like Amazon want with football streams?

Last year BT boss Gavin Patterson said his firm was happy to remain "a strong number two" behind Sky but could walk away if the costs became too high.

Yesterday a spokesman for Amazon declined to comment.

The Premier League would be a major addition to any company as it is one of the most popular football leagues around the world.
