Sensex touches all-time high of 34175.21; Nifty too reaches new peak

While Sensex rose 176 points to 34,146 level, Nifty was up 41 points to 10,547 level.

The 30-share Sensex spurted 205 points, or 0.60 per cent, to all-time high of 34,175.21 points, breaching its previous record high (intra-day) of 34,137.97 scaled on December 27.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan rose almost 0.3 percent in morning trade to 584.5, with benchmark indexes in Australia and South Korea up about 0.6 percent and 0.8 percent, respectively.

The BSE Mid-cap and BSE Small-cap indices were up 0.63% and 0.87%, respectively.

YES Bank (2.74%), Bharti Airtel (1.16%) and Tata Steel (1.07%) were the top Sensex gainers.

Among the sectoral indices, metal climbed 2.77 per cent, consumer durables 2.53 per cent, capital goods 2.11 per cent, PSU 1.55 per cent, infrastructure 1.03 per cent, healthcare 0.99 per cent, oil and gas 0.80 per cent, bankex 0.51 per cent and power 0.33 per cent.

The Nifty Metal Index inched higher, led by over 1% gain in shares of Hindalco Industries and Vedanta, tracking the overnight rise in global base metal prices.

The dollar's gains against major world currencies after a strong United States manufacturing data also impacted the rupee sentiment, a currency dealer said.

Brokers said improved liquidity in the market following continuous foreign fund inflows and increased buying by domestic institutional investors after the government moved forward on its bank recapitalisation programme boosted the trading sentiment.

The finance ministry yesterday sought Parliament's nod for extra expenditure of Rs 80,000 crore towards recapitalisation of bad loans-saddled public sector banks through bonds.

Japan's Nikkei gained 0.5 percent to a 26-year high.

Markets on Friday opened higher with the benchmark BSE Sensex rising above 100 points to cross the psychological 34,000-mark on strong global cues.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 152.45 points, or 0.61 per cent, to 25,075.13, the S&P 500 gained 10.93 points, or 0.40 per cent, to 2,723.99 and the Nasdaq Composite added 12.38 points, or 0.18 per cent, to 7,077.92.
