Health officials say the flu has become widespread in Utah

OH has not reported any flu-associated pediatric deaths so far for the 2017-18 flu season (adult flu-associated deaths are not required to be reported to public health agencies).

That year saw 15 flu deaths statewide, the most in recent memory, according to health officials.

According to this report from the Oklahoma State Department of Health, Johnston County is in the top ten counties for most people hospitalized for the flu from September to December 2017, totaling to eleven people hospitalized.

"We're above average (in flu cases) so far and earlier than usual", said Dr. Mark Rasnake, an infectious disease physician at the University of Tennessee Medical Center, on Friday.

"Most states are seeing an increase right now, and we are no exception", Buchanan said. This year, the illness has claimed nine lives already.

Flu is a serious illness, so it is very important for those in "at risk" groups, including young children, to be vaccinated with the free vaccine so that they can stay well. Methodist Hospital is both Henderson and Union Counties has visitor restrictions in place to keep people safe.

"The flu vaccine offers the best defence against the most common strains of the virus circulating this year and has an excellent safety record". That was not expected to be the type of flu most people would be experiencing, but that doesn't mean the flu shot is ineffective. The vaccine available in the U.S.is reportedly only 10% effective in preventing illness from the strain.

The vaccine works best for children so, when they are vaccinated, the rest of the family, especially older people, are better protected.

Frequent hand-washing to avoid spreading germs. "We just have to be diligent". He said influenza is especially risky for the elderly, who are at greater risk of developing pneumonia or other complications along with the flu - conditions that could be fatal when combined.
