Isaiah Thomas Explains Why He Didn't Want Video Tribute from Celtics

Paul Pierce is scheduled to have his No. 34 jersey retired by the team on February 11, which happens to be the next time the Celtics host the Cleveland Cavaliers - and former Celtics star Isaiah Thomas - at TD Garden.

Before Pierce made his comments Thursday, Celtics General Manager Danny Ainge said he thought the former player nicknamed "The Truth" would have no issue with Thomas getting a February 11 video tribute.

The Boston Celtics didn't air a video tribune to Isaiah Thomas-at the point guard's behest-during Wednesday's 102-88 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers, and they may have a mess on their hands as a result.

"That's Pierce's night", Thomas said, "but the video tribute ain't the whole night". After all the years I put in.

The 40-year-old - who won an National Basketball Association championship with Boston in 2008 - said he was recently present at Kobe Bryant's jersey retirement ceremony at Staples Center and he liked the way the Los Angeles Lakers played his highlights during time-outs. I wanted to be able to play, and I wanted my family to experience the love and appreciation this city and this organization was going to give me on that night. "I don't know why people are so mad about it - I'm not taking nothing from Paul Pierce".

Whether or not Thomas's tribute video will play on Pierce's jersey retirement night remains to be seen. If they choose to do it that night, that would be great. "I would be honored". "I think it won't interfere with Paul". And Paul understands that, everybody understands that. "And Isaiah deserves it, in our minds". "He hasn't made any demands; he just had one request, and we granted him that request". "After all the years I've been there". He will be on a minutes restriction for at least the first few games, which is why the team opted not to play him on the second game of a back-to-back, even though it was his much anticipated return to Beantown.
