Serena pulls out of Australian Open

Serena pulls out of Australian Open

Williams indicated after her loss to French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko that she might not make it to Melbourne.

"After competing in Abu Dhabi, I realised that although I am super close, I'm not where I personally want to be", Williams added. "I want to do far better than that and to do so, I will need a little more time".

Serena Williams has withdrawn from the tournament, saying she's not ready to return to competitive tennis.

When Williams won last year's Australian Open she was already two months pregnant.

"She had some complications - I mean, the baby was ideal, but she had some issues afterwards - and these medical issues delayed the moment that she could come back to practice".

Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley expressed his admiration for her efforts to return to the game she loves.

She had won the tournament seven times, with her first victory coming in 2003.

Her withdrawal deprives the opening Grand Slam of the year of another major star, after former world number one Andy Murray and Japan's Kei Nishikori both pulled out injured on Thursday.

"Serena transcends the sport in the way she approaches all aspects of her life".

"With that being said, and even though I am disappointed about it, I've decided not to compete in the Australian Open this year".

Also in the mix will be No. 2-ranked Garbine Muguruza, last year's Wimbledon victor, U.S. Open champion Sloane Stevens and Venus Williams, who will be aiming to win her eighth major singles title at the age of 37.

Stan Wawrinka: the 2014 Open champion also hasn't been sighted in six months as he battles a knee injury that will restrict his build-up to next week's one- night Tie Break Tens.

Latvian trailblazer Ostapenko in Paris and American Sloane Stephens at the US Open both won their first majors a year ago while Williams was sidelined.

Romanian Simona Halep, the current world No.1, and Dane Caroline Wozniacki are jostling for women's top seeding status in Melbourne.
