Packers hiring Brian Gutekunst as general manager

Packers hiring Brian Gutekunst as general manager

A person familiar with the decision tells The Associated Press that the Green Bay Packers are promoting player personnel director Brian Gutekunst to be the team's next general manager. Reports say the deal is for five years.

Gutekunst spent the last two seasons as the director of player personnel after spending 17 seasons in the team's scouting department.

Gutekunst interviewed for the San Francisco 49ers' GM job previous year and was a finalist before withdrawing from consideration before the team hired FOX Sports TV analyst and former National Football League safety John Lynch.

They swung for the fences first by requesting to interview Seattle Seahawks GM John Schneider, but they were turned down.

The Packers had not yet officially announced Gutekunst's hire as of Sunday afternoon.

Gutekunst played football at UW-La Crosse for two years, then became an assistant coach for the team after a shoulder injury cut his college career short.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy didn't want Russ Ball to be the team's next G.M. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers also reportedly wasn't a fan of the franchise's V.P. of football administration getting the ultimate in-house promotion. Gutekunst will have full control of personnel choices. That will fall clearly under what's best for the Green Bay Packers.

Gutekunst has been with the Packers since 1998, when he joined the club as a college scout.
