Amazon is Bringing Alexa to Windows 10 PCs This Spring

This year, a bevy of Windows 10 PC makers including HP, Acer, and Asus have announced partnerships with Amazon to incorporate Alexa into their devices.

To use Alexa, you'll be able to load up the app and tap a button, use a keyboard shortcut, or say the "Alexa" hotword. They have included far-field voice recognition so the assistant always responds to your voice, similarly to Microsoft's standard Cortana experience.

Some features like Alexa calling and messaging, security camera feeds, and access to streaming services like Spotify, Pandora, TuneIn, and Amazon Video will not be available at launch, an HP spokesperson told VentureBeat in an email. "Voice is a natural interface for interacting with technology and can make everyday tasks simpler", said Steve Rabuchin, Vice President, Amazon Alexa in the press release. In addition to Asus, HP has also announced today a new version of its Pavilion Wave desktop PC with Alexa.

The announcement comes hot, or rather lukewarm, on the heels of last summer's alliance between Amazon and Microsoft, whereby the two internet giants pledged to integrate their voice assistants (Alexa and Cortana respectively) by the end of 2017. "Working with Intel and Amazon engineers to optimize Intel Smart Sound Technology to help deliver a hands-free experience, the 360-degree multi-directional reflective audio can hear voice commands from any angle".

From the first look, Pavilion Wave Wave with Alexa for Windows looks like a speaker with a custom LED to indicate Alexa and its state at the top. With Alexa soon to be available on the same system, it could also spell doom for Microsoft's digital assistant. With the planned Cortana integration now overdue, Amazon appears to have taken another approach to getting Alexa in front of Windows users.

Acer's new V6820M and V6820i 4K UHD projectors will be among the first of its kind to support Amazon Alexa. And you'll find Alexa on so many devices these days, from light bulbs to ovens to vacuum cleaners, but heading to Windows 10 PCs is a very big deal considering how many people use and rely on Windows PCs every day.
