Operations at JFK Airport slowly return to normal

The Port Authority of NY and New Jersey says it will investigate the water pipe break that added to the weather-related delays at Kennedy Airport and will "hold all responsible parties accountable".

The Port Authority of NY and New Jersey, which oversees New York's airports, said airlines were rescheduling passengers but that near-record cold temperatures were adversely affecting equipment, further slowing the airport's recovery. Hundreds of flights were canceled, and hundreds more were delayed or rerouted as authorities sought safe refuge for planes before, during and after the storm.

"They should've been better prepared", said Mr Charles Schumer, the Democratic leader in the US Senate from NY.

Global arrivals to Terminal 4 were suspended earlier, with passengers who were already arrived being taken to other terminals for processing.

While all runways and taxiways had been ploughed clear of snow and reopened by Sunday, inbound flights faced 21/2-hour delays as the federal and local authorities carefully managed the flow of traffic at New York City's main worldwide travel gateway, according to the US Federal Aviation Administration's website.

"We will thoroughly investigate why the pipe burst", Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton said. KSL-TV reported that all flights coming into the airport were being diverted. "Customers may experience residual delays, particularly for global flights". It's not clear how many flights have been affected but the departure board is a sea of red and yellow cancellations and delays.

"What happened at JFK Airport is unacceptable, and travelers expect and deserve better", he said in a statement."The Port Authority is committed to providing the highest caliber of service to all travelers and we will hold those responsible accountable for any shortcoming we find".

Terminal 4 is privately run and had already seen huge delays, chaos and confusion after Thursday's shutdown because of the snowstorm and Friday's subsequent reopening.
