Shrewsbury take insipid West Ham to replay on Joe Hart's return

Shrewsbury take insipid West Ham to replay on Joe Hart's return

The League One title contenders held their Premier League opponents to a 0-0 draw in a televised third round tie at the Montgomery Waters Meadow yesterday.

West Ham travelled to the New Meadow to face Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup third round. After Cheikh Kouyate failed to get a telling touch to a unsafe cross by Cullen in the ninth minute, any whiff of a first-half breakthrough by the away team vanished.

Joe Hart thanked West Ham fans for using their heads after he borrowed a hat to help keep the Hammers in the FA Cup.

And Shrewsbury-born Hart admitted he needed help in the first half.

"I didn't have one available so someone in the West Ham end very kindly lent me one".

"I was a substitute against BATE Borisov in a Europa League game and I was called to get stripped to come on - but I didn't have any shinnies".

The League One high-fliers had the better of the contest and West Ham's former Shrews goalkeeper Joe Hart had to be alert to save Mat Sadler's close-ranger shot and Alex Rodman's powerful drive in the first half.

"I think we should have gone on and won the game, but that's football, it doesn't happen for you sometimes, but it's good that we could put in a performance like we did".

Moyes was handed a famous Cup defeat by Shrewsbury in 2003 as Everton boss and he will hope for an improved showing in the replay at London Stadium.

"Josh was probably our best player today". Shrewsbury, neat and compact as they have been this term, looked for an opening of their own, with Shaun Whalley asking questions of the Hammers rearguard with an exquisite angled dead-ball which was scrambled to safety.

"The atmosphere was sensational - I wish we had that every week", Canaries academy product Morris said. We've had some great results.
