With one withering comment, Natalie Portman made a big statement

With one withering comment, Natalie Portman made a big statement

"There's so many films out there that are so good, directed by women".

The "Annihilation" star presented the award for best director at the Golden Globes Sunday night, but not without a dig at the biased category.

Portman, like most of the female celebrities who attended the event at the Beverly Hilton, wore black to show support for Time's Up, an initiative that seeks to promote equality, wage parity, and inclusion for women.

"Anyway, I'm very proud to stand in a room with people who speak out against gender inequality, sexual harassment, and the pettiness that has poisoned our politics", Streisand continued. However, it was Natalie Portman who truly took the cake.

The admonishment continued when Barbra Streisand was introduced as having "made history as the only woman to receive a Globe for directing".

It was a biting remark that became even more impactful when Greta Gerwig (previously presumed to be a shoe-in for the category) picked up a win for Best Picture, Comedy right after.

Guillermo Del Toro went on to win the much-deserved award for his tremendous The Shape of Water, but movie fans were split with regards to Portman's speech.

Left out of the nominations were the female directors of some highly acclaimed films from a year ago, including Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird), Patty Jenkin (Wonder Woman), and Dee Rees (Mudbound). Since the Academy Awards first aired in 1929, just four women have been nominated for Best Director: Lina Wertmuller (Seven Beauties), Jane Campion (The Piano), Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation) and Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker).
