Google Honored biochemist Har Gobind Khorana on His 96th Birthday Anniversary

Google Honored biochemist Har Gobind Khorana on His 96th Birthday Anniversary

There are four types of nucleotides for each DNA, and RNA, an the order in which they are put connected - forming the double helix is important for determining which types of proteins the cells create.

In the Indian-American scientist's honour, Google is changing its logo in 13 countries to a doodle - or illustration - of him and his DNA work.

"Khorana's passion for science started under a tree in the small village of Raipur, India, and grew into Nobel Prize-winning research on nucleotides and genes", Google wrote in the biography announcing the January 9, 2018 Google Doodle.

Khorana's also succeeded in the construction of the world's first synthetic gene.

Bangalore-based illustrator Rohan Dahotre shared the 1968 Nobel Prize in Physiology or medicine with two colleagues named Robert Holley and Marshall Nirenberg who presented Khorana in the doodle.

While Khorana was known as a modest and down to earth man despite his accomplishments, he also used to say, "I only work on big problems". "Scholarships helped propel the budding scientist through his scholastic journey, obtaining his doctorate in organic chemistry in 1948", noted Google. His exact date of birth is unknown, but documents show January 9, 1922. The DNA research which awarded him the Nobel Prize, he began at the University of Columbia.

Khorana came from humble beginnings.

While studying in Switzerland, Dr. Khorana met and married his wife, Esther Elizabeth Sible, with whom he had three children.

Khorana died of natural causes on November 9, 2011, at the age of 89 in MA. Much of Khorana's work took place in Vancouver after he was offered a job there in 1952 and at the University of Wisconsin in 1960. He joined the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1970, where he would remain until his retirement in 2007. After being awarded with the Government of India Fellowship in 1945, Khorana went to England for a PhD degree at the University of Liverpool. He, being a widower since 2001, was survived by his children, Julia and Davel.
