South Korea Pulls Back From Sex Slave Agreement With Japan

South Korea Pulls Back From Sex Slave Agreement With Japan

Kang, however, noted that her country will not demand renegotiation with the Japanese government over the deal as the 2015 agreement was an official deal between governments of the two countries.

In Tokyo, Foreign Minister Taro Kono told reporters, "We can't accept any request at all from South Korea for Japan to take further measures".

"While the administration has changed", Kono responded Tuesday, "responsibly implementing" the pact remains a matter of "universal global principle". However, Seoul pressed Tokyo to be more honest towards the victims, saying the controversial deal does not solve the problem.

But some of the victims have called for South Korea to return the money to Japan, prompting Seoul's announcement that it will contribute the same amount of money and discuss with Tokyo what to do with the Japanese contribution already made.

Kang said there is no denying that the agreement was formal.

In 2015, when there were 47, 36 accepted the settlement, a the official said. "I agree that it makes no sense to pay the salaries with that money", she said.

Moon also welcomed surviving "comfort women" to a presidential office lunch last week.

South Korea "will urge the Japanese government to take responsible measures over the defective "comfort women" deal in line with the spirit of seriousness and cosmopolitanism", the source was quoted as saying.

South Korea has announced it would not seek renegotiation of terms of the landmark sex slavery deal with Japan in a sharp U-turn from its earlier position. To Japan's chagrin, a similar statue went up in front of the consulate in Busan soon after. Reportedly, the United States has indicated its "fatigue over history" when it came to the long-term question of cold relations between South Korea and Japan stemming from historical issues.

Kenji Kanasugi, right, director general of the Japanese Foreign Ministry's Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau, shakes hands with Kim Yong-kil, Korea's director general of Northeast Asian affairs, before meeting to discuss diplomatic issues at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Seoul on Monday.

Sources familiar with the issue said the remaining survivors refused to accept the money from the foundation, demanding direct compensation from the Japanese government instead, or for other reasons. Abe is leaning toward declining an invitation to next month's Winter Olympics in South Korea, despite the potential for top-level talks between the countries.
