Takata airbag recall grows by 3.3 million more cars

Takata airbag recall grows by 3.3 million more cars

Takata, a renowned Japanese air bag maker, has reportedly recalled an additional of over 3.3 million faulty airbag inflators.

The most recent recalls include frontal airbags in some 2009, 2010 and 2013 vehicles made by Honda, Toyota, Audi BMW, Daimler Vans, Fiat Chrysler, Ford, GM, Jaguar-Land Rover, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, and Tesla. The NHTSA said the propellant in the inflators breaks down after long-term exposure to high-temperature fluctuations and humidity, which can cause the propellant to burn too quickly. At least 20 people have been killed and more than 180 injured across the world because of the malfunction, which causes spontaneous and violent combustion, according to CBS.

The recalls, which are being managed by NHTSA, are being phased in over the next three years. The tally now stands at approximately 34 million vehicles, making it the largest wave of recalls in USA history.

The NHTSA maintains a list of vehicles affected and guidance on steps to take if a auto is affected.

The automakers listed above say they will be providing consumers with the specific models that are affected by the recall later this month. The agency also revealed that, Takata's recalls are unprecedented in complexity and size, but nonetheless have resulted in groundbreaking lessons that will aid automakers to accomplish their fix goals faster. Older models and those in states with high humidity and temperatures are getting priority.

Takata air bags can explode and hurl shrapnel. The inflators can explode in a crash and spray passengers with potentially lethal metal shards. According to the Detroit Free Press, 19 automakers have recalled 43.1 million inflators and 18.5 million have in fact been replaced.

Takata, which declared bankruptcy last summer, first began recalling the airbag devices in 2014. You can also use their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) tool to see if your vehicle is part of the recall.

The full list of vehicles affected by the air bag recall, broken down by manufacturer, is also available on the NHTSA website.
