A single cigarette can trigger smoking addiction, says study

A single cigarette can trigger smoking addiction, says study

They added that it showed the remarkable hold that cigarettes can establish after a single experience - and said the findings should be used to warn teenagers against experimenting with tobacco.

Research gathered from 215,000 survey participants in the U.S., U.K, Australia and New Zealand showed 60.3 percent of people had tried smoking cigarettes, and of those who tried it, an estimated 68.9 percent picked up a daily habit.

The authors conclude: "The transition from trying the first cigarette through occasional to daily smoking usually implies that a recreational activity is turning into a compulsive need that has to be satisfied virtually continuously".

It's not just the people in the United Kingdom who are taking a positive step towards leading a cigarette-free healthy life, but the name synonymous with tobacco since the 19 century - Phillip Morris - is also taking a step towards quitting selling cigarettes. Only 19 per cent from age group 11 to 15 has ever tried a cigarette.

The, was based on 215,000 respondents to eight surveys between 2000 and 2016 contained in the Global Health Data Exchange. We've found that the conversion rate from "first time smoker" to "daily smoker" is surprisingly high, which helps confirm the importance of preventing cigarette experimentation in the first place.

Researchers found that around 7 in 10 of those who said they'd ever tried a cigarette went on to smoke daily.

Prof Hajek added: "Concerns were expressed that e-cigarettes could be as addictive as conventional cigarettes, but this has not been the case".

The research team also noted that it's possible current smokers were less likely to take part in this survey than non or past smokers: A great part of the homeless population smokes and people with mental health problems, who are less likely to answer surveys.

If you have a circle of friends and anyone around you who are daily smokers, then you might have thought to give it a try once for sure. But a recent study has revealed that smoking even one cigarette for the first time can make more than two-thirds of people addicts.

'The presence of nicotine is clearly not the whole story'.

The overall smoking rate for New Zealand adults over the same time period has dropped from 20 to 16 percent. In 2010 nearly 20% of people smoke in the United Kingdom, and in 2017 that number shrunk to 19.3%.
