Donald Trump cryptic about contacts with North Korea's Kim Jong Un

Donald Trump cryptic about contacts with North Korea's Kim Jong Un

When asked whether he has spoken directly with Kim, Trump declined to comment. "I'm not saying I have or haven't", he said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal published Thursday. "I just don't want to comment". "I have relationships with people". "I could give you 20 examples".

We are only 11 days into 2018, and Kim Jong Un is reportedly preparing another nuclear test.

The leader is thought to have turned 35, although the North Korean state does not publicly recognize his birthday and there is no mention of the date on the regime calendar.

The underground base, which is carved into a mountain in the north-east of the hermit kingdom, has been the site of North Korea's last five nuclear tests.

President Trump, who has repeatedly called Kim Jong-Un "Rocket Man" and his government a "band of criminals" while threatening to destroy the country with "fire and fury", said Thursday that he has a "very good relationship" with the Korean dictator. Though Mr Trump once said he would be "honoured" to meet Mr Kim, he has increasingly responded to Pyongyang's threats with bombastic statements of his own.

Despite the name-calling, there is recent evidence of a thaw between the two adversaries. Trump told a news conference in Washington on Wednesday the United States would be willing to speak to Pyongyang "under the right circumstances". Relations between the two Koreas have warmed ahead of next month's Winter Olympics to be held in the South Korean city of PyeongChang.

The comments to The Journal echoed remarks Trump made to reporters over the weekend at Camp David, in which the president said that dialogue with Pyongyang was not impossible. "Hopefully, a lot of good things are going to work out".

A North Korean official said the disaster happened during the construction of an underground tunnel, South Korea's Yonhap news agency reports.

There were also talks of carrying out a limited strike on North Korea with the fears of a nuclear war in the background.

Trump claimed credit Wednesday for the inter-Korean dialogue, saying North Korea was feeling the pressure of a US -led campaign of sanctions over its nuclear weapons and missile development.

Kim has vowed never to give up his country's nuclear weapons, regarding them as his last line of defense against a USA invasion.

Tunneling activities at North Korea's main nuclear test site have been stepped up, a USA -based think tank said Thursday, even as the inter-Korean peace talks resumed over the past week.
