Honda unveils images of new Insight prototype

The 2019 Insight is just the first of many hybrids, plug-in hybrids and electric cars on their way to your local Honda dealer over the next decade. Arriving later in 2018 as the fifth electrified vehicle launched by Honda over the past year, Insight will join the Clarity series (Clarity Fuel Cell, Clarity Electric and Clarity Plug-in Hybrid) and the all-new 2018 Accord Hybrid, arriving at dealerships nationwide early this year. In fact, Honda says that the Insight will be positioned above the Civic as a "premium compact", offering a roomy interior and civilized road manners. Besides unique front and rear fascia with standard LED headlights and taillights, the compact-sized Insight borrows the profile design and doors of the Civic sedan.

The all-new Honda Insight Prototype will make its world debut on January 15 at the North American International Auto Show, giving consumers a first glimpse of the latest model in Honda's growing lineup of electrified vehicles. Honda has received a fair bit of flak for its infotainment system lately, but it promises more intuitive, smartphone-like features and functionality this round, including customisable app tiles and home-screen shortcuts, along with available Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and WiFi-enabled over-the-air system updates. Honda boasts class-leading passenger space.

The car's lithium-ion hybrid battery will live under the rear seats, enabling 60/40-split folding rear seatbacks and a pass through into the otherwise conventional trunk. In most driving conditions, the vehicle will drive on electric power alone, with the gasoline engine acting as a generator, just like in the Clarity PHEV-but without the plug-in option.

Utilizing a 1.5-liter Atkinson cycle engine four-cylinder and electric motor, Honda says it is anticipating at least a 50 mpg rating from the EPA on the Insight. We're thinking about 150 to 160 hp, which would be higher than its rivals.

Unlike the new CR-V, however, the third-generation Insight is not bound for Europe, but it will sit in the brand's USA line-up between the Civic and the Accord.

The Honda Insight Prototype previews the 2019 Insight, which should look almost identical.

The Japanese auto giant had already confirmed the Insight name was going to be resurrected, again, but now it has released official images of a new Insight prototype that looks to be pretty close to a production-ready model. No pricing has been announced yet, but we're expecting a base MSRP of about $26,000, right between the Ioniq and the Prius.
