Iran has foiled plot to use protests to overthrow system, leader says

US officials had put the number held at 1,000.

Daily "Dawn" reported Supreme Leader of Iran Ayatollah Ali Khamenei says Iran has foiled attempts by its foreign enemies to turn legitimate protests into an insurgency to overthrow the Islamic Republic.

On Tuesday, the US House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed a resolution condemning what it called the Iranian leadership's crackdown on protests.

Khamenei added that all the moves of hostile nations against Tehran over the past 40 years were "attacks on the Islamic Revolution".

"Express Tribune" added that Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has said, ' Once again, the nation tells the US, Britain, and those who seek to overthrow the Islamic Republic of Iran from overseas that 'you've failed, and you will fail in the future, too'. He also urged the U.K.'s "friends in the White House not to throw away" a nuclear deal with Iran that Trump has pledged to decertify.

On Monday, state-run Aftab News reported that Sina Ghanbari died in custody after being held in Tehran's notorious Evin Prison along with hundreds of other protesters.

Judiciary officials said that two of those detained had taken their own lives in custody.

In a rare public appearance, the head of Israeli intelligence agency Mossad said the protests were due to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani's failure to improve people's economic or social circumstances, but he said they were unlikely to overthrow the establishment.

Demonstrations broke out across Iran last month fueled by anger at the lackluster economy and official corruption.

Iran's unemployment rate among those 15 to 29 is well over 24%, according to official statistics - and even higher among urban youth and women.

Iran's supreme leader has taken to Twitter to attack President Donald Trump, accusing the USA leader of attempting to stir unrest after a wave of protests hit his country.

This story was first published on CNN.com, "3,700 people were arrested during Iran protests, lawmaker says".
