Mark Zuckerberg announces sweeping changes to your Facebook feed

Facebook says pages whose posts "prompt conversations between friends" will be less severely impacted.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced Thursday that the social media giant would begin emphasizing more "meaningful" content on users' feeds - giving greater weight to posts from friends and family and less to businesses, brands and media. He said that algorithms would now favour social posts over ads and news stories and that any content should encourage meaningful interactions between people.

The company says people will likely spend less time on Facebook as a result.

Facebook and its social media competitors have been inundated by criticism that their products reinforce users' views on social and political issues and lead to addictive viewing habits, raising questions about possible regulation and the businesses' long-term viability.

NEW YORK (AP) - Facebook is tweaking what people see to make their time on it more "meaningful" in a move that could hurt publishers and news organizations that rely on it to spread their content.

What do you think about the changes to the news feed pretty much everyone uses every day?

Users should see the change across the next few months.

"This is recognition of the issues they've faced with toxic content", said Brian Wieser, an analyst at Pivotal Research Group. The legislation imposes heavy fines on social media companies, such as Facebook, for failing to take down posts containing hate speech.

"At its best, Facebook has always been about personal connections".

The changes come after a tough year for Facebook that included congressional hearings on how Russian Federation used it to influence the 2016 US elections.

On Thursday, he said numerous discussions about Facebook's responsibilities had prompted the company "to get a better handle on some of the negative things that could happen in the system". On the other hand, passively reading articles or watching videos - even if they're entertaining or informative - may not be as good, Zuckerberg said.

The billionaire tech mogul blames the explosion of "video and other public content".

"Just because a tool can be used for good and bad, that doesn't make the tool bad.it just means you need to understand what the negative is so that you can mitigate it", he said.

Adam Mosseri, vice president of product management at Facebook, who is responsible for running the News Feed, acknowledged that "there will be anxiety" from partners and publishers who often complain about the constant changes in what will be shown across the network.

"By focusing on bringing people closer together - whether it's with family and friends, or around important moments in the world - we can help make sure that Facebook is time well spent", he said.

Facebook has denied it is a media company, but in recent years, brands, media companies and other content creators have turned to Facebook for its unparalleled reach and engagement.
