Our soldiers massacred Rohingya - Myanmar

Our soldiers massacred Rohingya - Myanmar

In a rare admission of guilt, Myanmar's military says its security forces were responsible for the deaths of 10 Rohingya found in a mass grave.

Thousands of Rohingyas had left the violence of what United Nations had called Ethnic cleansing, since August 25 in 2017.

Fortify Rights, Amnesty International, and Human Rights Watch described the admission that ethnic Rakhine villagers and security forces killed 10 Royingya Muslims in Inn Dinn village on September 2, 2018 as the "tip of the iceberg", and urged an international investigation. Over 650,000 Rohingya have since fled across the border to neighbouring Bangladesh. Until now, the military has maintained that it is carrying out legitimate counterinsurgency operations. "They were on the run because the Inn Dinn village was under siege by the Myanmar government", he said.

The pair have widely covered the military campaign in Rakhine although Reuters has declined to comment on whether they were specifically reporting on the mass grave in Inn Din. The army appointed a senior officer to investigate.

Soldiers and villagers were involved in the killings of "Bengali terrorists" and legal action would be taken against them, said the statement on the Facebook page of Min Aung Hlaing, the military's commander-in-chief, quotes Al-Jazeera.

The captives should have been handed over to the police, in line with procedure, but the militants were attacking "continuously" and had destroyed two military vehicles with explosives, it said.

More than 600,000 Rohingya, who are not recognised by the Myanmar government as one of the country's many ethnic groups, have fled to Bangladesh since August previous year, when violence between armed Rohingya and Myanmar security forces prompted a severe crackdown. This meant that "there were no conditions to transfer the 10 Bengali terrorists to the police station and so it was made a decision to kill them".

Angry ethnic Rakhine Buddhist villagers, who had lost relatives in militant attacks, wanted to kill the captives, and stabbed them after forcing them into a grave on the outskirts of the village.

It said the 10 had been captured after security forces had come under attack from around 200 insurgents.

In November, Kono visited a refugee camp in Cox's Bazar, southeastern Bangladesh, where Rohingya had fled.

"Action will be taken against the villagers... and the security force members who violated the rules of engagement according to the law", the statement said, adding that those who failed to report the incident would be similarly punished.

The captives should have been handed over to police, the army statement said, but with militants mounting continuous attacks and destroying two military vehicles, "there were no conditions to transfer the 10 Bengali terrorists to the police station and so it was chose to kill them".

However, Regional Director for Southeast Asia and the Pacific, James Gomez, cautioned: "the full extent of the violations and crimes [.] will not be known until the U.N. Fact-Finding Mission and other independent observers are given unfettered access to Myanmar".
