Bangladeshi man pleads not guilty in NYC subway bomb attack

Bangladeshi man pleads not guilty in NYC subway bomb attack

Port Authority bombing suspect Akayed Ullah entered a time-qualified not guilty plea Thursday at his Manhattan federal court arraignment on charges of detonating a pipe bomb last month in an underground commuter corridor near Times Square.

The federal grand jury indicted Ullah yesterday with one count of providing and attempting to provide material support to the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), and one count of using and attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction.

During Wednesday's indictment hearing, US Attorney Geoffrey Berman said the selection of time and place has made it clear that Akayed's intention was to inflict as much damage as possible, and to strike fear into the hearts of New Yorkers in the name of Islamic State.

Akayed Ullah was arrested after allegedly setting off a pipe bomb in a tunnel leading to Times Square on December 11, 2017.

Akayed Ullah, 27, botched the attempt, injuring himself during the holiday season attack in a passageway near the Port Authority Bus Terminal in midtown Manhattan. He answered, "Yes." When asked for his plea, Ullah responded, "At this moment, not guilty".

Court documents state that Ullah carried a 9-volt battery inside his trousers pocket with wires connected to a metal pipe.

Ullah migrated from Bangladesh some six years ago on a family visa. Ullah was injured, and three others were slightly hurt.

Ullah suffered lacerations and burns to his hand and stomach in the bombing, authorities said.

"We have an indictment containing charges like this, I think that it's easy to lose sight of the very important and invaluable rights that every person is afforded in our system of justice, including Mr. Ullah", Gallicchio said. He has not yet set a trial date.

Federal prosecutors say Ullah addressed a message to the President Trump alongside a note that pledged his allegiance to ISIS.

Ullah had a pipe bomb strapped to his body with Velcro when it went off inside the station. The president later demanded tightened immigration rules.

Prosecutors have said he wanted to cause carnage to avenge US aggression toward the Islamic State group.
