Karni Sena protests against CBFC in Mumbai, over 150 held

Karni Sena protests against CBFC in Mumbai, over 150 held

They said that changing the name of the film was not enough and demanded a complete ban on the Sanjay Leela Bhansali film starring Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh.

The producers also said they appreciate the "balanced approach" adopted by the censor board to address the situation.

Security has been beefed up outside the office of Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) in Mumbai after Karni Sena workers reached there to stage a protest against the release of the film.

CBFC cleared the film last week with five modifications.

The panel comprised four historians from Rajasthan, who Karni Sena claims, advised the CBFC against clearing the film. Amongst the suggested modifications was the title change of the film. The Karni Sena has also been reportedly demanding the resignation of Prasoon Joshi, the chairman of CBFC.

On the same day, Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhra Raje had announced that the controversial movie will not be released in the state on January 25.

Deepika's 'Padmavati' officially gets renamed as 'Padmaavat'!

Interestingly, the name of the movie's Twitter handle has been changed but the cover image is still of the poster, which reads Padmavati.

According to a release issued by the CBFC, the board had a meeting of their examining committee on December 28 and chose to give the film a "UA certification along with some modifications and likely change of the film's title on the basis the attributed material/creative source".

They were even asked to add two disclaimers - one that clearly does not claim historical accuracy, and another which makes the point that the film in no manner subscribes to the practice of Sati or seeks to glorify it.

This Bollywood period drama is based on the epic 16th-century poem "Padmavat" by Malik Mohammed Jaisi.

According to The New Indian Express, the State's government said that there was no order as such to ban the film's release.

It said the Bhansali Productions and Viacom18 Motion Pictures, as producers, have accepted and have made all the above changes.
