NC, SC Governors Want States Exempt From Offshore Drilling Expansion

U.S. Rep. Buddy Carter, R-Pooler, said he supports an "expansive energy independence policy" but that Trump's proposed policy change has "left me with some questions". "Each of these sectors could be adversely impacted by new offshore oil and gas activities off of our coast", Inslee wrote.

Governor Roy Cooper is asking the Trump administration to exempt North Carolina from a plan to open more coastal waters to offshore oil drilling. However, once the announcement was made, apparently the president had second thoughts about one state, Florida.

Cooper says coastal tourism in North Carolina generates $3 billion annually.

The request comes two days after Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke granted an exemption to the state of Florida after a meeting with Gov. Rick Scott.

Democratic governors along both coasts unanimously oppose drilling, as do a number of Republican governors, including McMaster, Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan and Massachusetts Gov. Charles Baker. "I am opposed to seismic testing off of SC shore", he said. "Our tourism industry and glorious natural resources are beyond compare in the United States, they are a source of enormous economic growth and prosperity and we can not take a chance with those resources, those industries, and that economy". It is just too important. "This is a matter of serious importance to us in SC", said McMaster. Kaine asked at a news conference Wednesday.

Maryland Republican Gov. Larry Hogan said his administration would use "any viable legal claims, actions or suits against the U.S. government to prevent".

After the news broke about Republican-governed Florida, Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., asked whether there are different rules for blue states like California.

Analysts see the administration's move as opening a wider legal crack in the offshore drilling plan, with states and environmentalists waiting in the wings to start suing.

Democrats were just as upset.

"No federal leases have been granted off the California coast since 1984", KPCC writes, and new state leases have been banned for decades. "Where do we sign up for a waiver?"

The three Democratic governors of California, Oregon, and Washington issued a join statement following the release of the new plan, resoundingly opposing any drilling off their shores.

Former White House ethics chief Walter Shaub said Zinke's decision to exempt Florida from the drilling plan appears to be a conflict of interest for Trump.

"Virginia's governor (and governor-elect) have made this same request, but we have not received the same commitment".

In the announcement, Zinke called Scott, a fellow Republican, a "straightforward leader that can be trusted".

The bureau also is proposing or has granted more than a dozen other wind-power leases and projects from ME to North Carolina. Gov. Paul LePage is alone among East Coast governors in his supporter for Atlantic offshore drilling. "Bill Nelson, it looks like a political play to make Rick Scott look like some sort of a hero", Glickman said.

The Trump administration wants to expand offshore drilling on both the nation's coasts in areas that had previously been restricted. "This is about playing politics with our coast", Sierra Weaver, senior attorney with the Southern Environmental Law Center, said in a statement.

And then on Tuesday night, January 9, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke announced that the waters off the Florida coast will be excluded from the new plan after he met with Florida Gov. Rick Scott at the Tallahassee International Airport.
