Turkey urges Russia, Iran to stop Syria offensive on Idlib

Turkey urges Russia, Iran to stop Syria offensive on Idlib

Ankara has therefore called on Russian Federation and Iran, and rightly so, to cease and desist from their active and open aggression and military involvement in the fighting in the Idlib province and summoned their ambassadors in Ankara for this objective.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu alleged earlier that Syria's government forces had been delivering strikes on the units of the so-called opposition in the Idlib province "under the guise of fighting terrorists". "Iran and Russian Federation", warned Cavusoglu, "need to carry out their responsibilities".

"Iran and Russian Federation should fulfil their responsibility".

Syrian regime's forces have increased military operations recently to impose control over Idlib and the Eastern Ghouta, the last two rebel bastions in Syria. "They have a different intention".

The People's Protection Units (YPG), the armed wing of the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party, or PYD, is seen by the United States as the most effective ground partner for the US-led coalition fighting ISIL in Syria.

Ankara says YPG fighters are linked to Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) separatists inside Turkey, who have waged an armed campaign since 1984 that has killed more than 40,000 people. "If you are guarantors, which you are, stop the regime".

A previous attempt in November to convene talks in Sochi failed due to disagreements between the prospective participants.

According to diplomatic sources, at the meeting the Turkish side expressed its concern over the U.S. support for Syria's Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD).

Ankara has already summoned the Russian and Iranian ambassadors, in the biggest public flare-up of tensions with Moscow and Tehran in months.

For the Russian part, Russia's Defense Ministry said its forces run in Hmeymim base in Syria repelled a series of drone attacks Saturday.

Turkey has accused the Syrian government of using the presence of the Nusra Front, which now fights under the banner of the Tahrir al-Sham alliance, as an excuse to attack civilians and moderate opposition groups.
