Government begins accepting DACA renewal requests

Heitkamp said she attended a bipartisan White House meeting Tuesday about the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program or DACA. The program will follow the same terms that were in place before it was rescinded September 5, according to a news release Saturday.

He challenged Congress to replace the program with. Under Alsup's ruling, renewal applications must still be accepted, giving those approved another two years from the new date of their application approval.

Former DACA recipients whose grant expired before that date cannot request a renewal, but they can file a new request, the agency said.

Young undocumented immigrants, known as "Dreamers", rally outside the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday in support of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals.

The program granted temporary protection from deportation to hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants who were brought to the U.S.as children, often referred to as "dreamers".

But that agreement was cast into doubt the same day when a firestorm erupted after reports surfaced that President Trump, during a meeting with lawmakers over an immigration bill, asked why the US was accepting immigrants from "shithole countries" referring reportedly to immigrants from Haiti and Africa. Already about 120 DACA recipients who failed to renew applications by October 5 deadline are losing deportation protections and work permits daily. Those accepted for the program received permits to work legally in the US for two years, which could be renewed for additional 2-year periods. As of September, about 700,000 people are now protected under the program.

Trump's decision on DACA in September set an October 5 deadline for renewal applications, which would give recipients an another two years of legal residency in the United States.

The president has demanded extra border security, including funding for a wall, as well as an end to family-based chain migration and the visa lottery program.
