Kris Bryant gets record first-year arbitration deal

Kris Bryant gets record first-year arbitration deal

Bryant settled with the Chicago Cubs at $10.85 million, the most for a player eligible for arbitration for the first time. This is the final year of contract control the Cubs have on him, and team brass has publicly acknowledged that fixing Wilson's form will be one of the primary tasks they ask of new pitching coach Jim Hickey.

Going into the deadline, it was thought that Bryant could break the record for a player's first year of arbitration potentially surpassing Ryan Howard's $10M deal from 10 years ago. All three were also arbitration eligible. Infielder Tommy La Stella will make $950,000 this coming season.

Five of the six players eligible for arbitration reportedly agreed to deals with the team Friday with only Justin Grimm on the outside looking in. Keuchel, the 2015 AL Young Award victor, went 14-5 with a 2.90 ERA and 125 strikeouts in the regular season and was 2-2 with a 3.58 ERA in five postseason starts. The 30-year-old left-hander made $11.4 million last season, when he had 15 saves and a 2.89 ERA.

Bryant, who is 26, is just one of three Major League Baseball players, along with Howard and Buster Posey to win the Rookie of the Year along with the MVP prior to becoming eligible for arbitration.

Teammate Addison Russell also agreed to terms for 2018, receiving a contract for $3.2 million.

Bryant has 94 home runs in his first three seasons in the big leagues to go with a.288 batting average and.388 on-base percentage.
