Quakes Rattle Western Iran

Quakes Rattle Western Iran

Baghdad/Ankara - An natural disaster jolted the Iran-Iraq border region on Thursday at around 10 a.m. (0700 GMT), causing some panic in Baghdad and central Iraq, according to residents and state-run media.

The strongest of the three quakes, measuring magnitude 5.6, hit the western province of Kermanshah near the border with Iraq at 10:29 am (0659 GMT), according to the Iranian seismology centre.

The quake's magnitude was 5.5, according to the United States Geological Survey. There were no reports of significant damage, and electricity and internet services were not interrupted in central Baghdad.

Iran is prone to near-daily quakes as it sits on major fault lines.

In November previous year, a massive quake of magnitude 7.3 struck areas near Iran-Iraq border.

The temblors hit on Thursday morning, were felt far and wide and even rattled the Iraqi capital of Baghdad.

The official IRNA news agency said the tremor rocked the village of Hojedk, 400 miles south of Tehran, and struck at a depth of 6.2 miles. In 2003, a 6.6-magnitude quake flattened the historic city of Bam, killing 26,000 people. Four people suffered minor injuries in Iran, state television reported.

Late Thursday afternoon, another 4.8 magnitude natural disaster struck in Kerman, according to the USGS.
