Toronto Girl's Hijab Reportedly Cut Off By Man With Scissors, Say Police

Toronto Girl's Hijab Reportedly Cut Off By Man With Scissors, Say Police

Police in the Canadian city of Toronto are investigating a possible hate crime after an 11-year-old Muslim girl was attacked by a man who allegedly tried to cut off her hijab twice on her way to school.

"A student at Pauline Johnson Public School was assaulted by an unknown male while on her way to school this morning".

An assailant, in two attempts within 10 minutes, cut the girl's hijab using scissors while she was walking to school with her brother on Friday, a Toronto police spokeswoman said. She felt someone behind her pull the hood of her winter jacket down and when she turned around and the man ran off. Khawlah and her brother made a decision to cross the road and walk with a bigger group of people. But shortly after the first assault, the same man returned and "continued cutting" Noman's headscarf while grinning, before running away.

When they got to school they found that her hijab had a 30cm cut in at from the bottom.

Police described the suspect as 5 feet 7 inches with a thin build who was between the ages of 20 to 30.

"The girl was fearless enough to confront the man, make some noise and then proceed to walk with a bunch of other kids realizing there's safety in numbers", she said.

She and her brother joined a group of other students also walking to school, for safety, but the siblings became separated from the group and from each other at an intersection crossing. She said she was on the sidewalk when she sensed a man behind her and turned to find him holding scissors.

Sharing his awful experience, her younger brother said, "I saw my sister, she was frightened".

The man is said to be in his mid-20s, and was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and black trousers. And we'll be working closely with police to offer any assistance that we can.

"We must stand firm in our support of this young girl who was assaulted simply for wearing a hijab", she said.

Toronto's mayor added that he was "shocked and appalled".

"This does not represent who we are, " Wynne wrote in a tweet.

Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne called the attack "a cowardly act of hatred". "I want her and her family and her friends and community to know that that is not what Canada is".
