Carlos Cordeiro elected as US Soccer Federation President

Carlos Cordeiro elected as US Soccer Federation President

Carlos Cordeiro insists he's the right choice to lead the U.S. Soccer Federation, which must chart a new course after its men's national team failed to qualify for this year's World Cup. "A vote for either one of them is a vote for the status quo, disunity, discord and more failure".

The result comes at the end of a months-long campaign that began following the USA men's national team's loss to Trinidad and Tobago on October 10, a result that ensured the team wouldn't qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation.

Former U.S. Olympic and World Cup goalkeeper Hope Solo, who was suspended from the women's team for "unprofessional" comments made at the 2016 Rio Games, received less than 1.6 percent of the vote in each round. In addition, he represents U.S. Soccer on the CONCACAF Council and FIFA's Stakeholders Committee. MLS, as well as the National Women's Soccer League and United Soccer League, shifted their support to Cordeiro after the second ballot.

"We got a candidate we can unify behind", Holden said about Cordeiro after the vote, per Fox Soccer.

"Elections are messy", said Gulati during a 45-minute address before the electronic votes were cast on cellphone-sized voting pads that caused a fair amount of head-scratching in amongst the electorate.

Cordeiro will serve a four-year term. Ex-players such as Wynalda, Caliguiri and Solo, as well as the savvy Steve Gans and his fellow attorney Michael Winograd, who dropped out a the end of the second round with a 0% share, had offered some hope.

Gans and Winograd then withdrew.

The goal of the six opposition candidates is to cut the combined support of Carter and Cordeiro down to less than 50 percent on the first ballot, giving one of the six remaining candidates a chance to pick up steam on the later rounds. To those of you who didn't vote for me, I'm going to work to earn your support and trust over the next four years.

The 58-year-old had faced mounting pressure following the United States men's shock failure to qualify for next year's World Cup in Russian Federation.

Saturday morning, Grant Wahl reported that the Athletes Council, which controls 20 percent of the overall vote, would vote as a bloc for Carlos Cordeiro, making him the favorite along with Kathy Carter, who reportedly secured the votes of all NWSL delegates (4.8 percent of the total vote) Friday night.
