An American Man Actually Won A Luge Medal At The Olympics

American Chris Mazdzer had the performance of his life to vault from fourth to second in Runs 3 and 4 to win a shocking silver medal - the first medal in men's singles in USA history. It would take some luck and some incredible times on the final two runs to move West into contention for a medal. Now that an American has earned a medal in men's singles luge too, team spokesman Sandy Caligiore said Sunday they've got their sights set even higher. He crossed the finish line fifth, sitting for several seconds on his sled in disbelief and anguish as Gleirscher celebrated his upset win.

World champion Kindl was ninth after a disappointing night, while Pavlichenko lies almost a second off the pace in 17th, his medal hopes appearing all but shot.

All three had the race of their lives.

"The last two times it was no problem", the beaming Bavarian, who holds a 0.188-second lead over Gleirscher, told reporters. I can hardly believe it.

Heading into the fourth and final run, he was in the right state of mind.

Mazdzer then unleashed a third-round run of 47.534, the finest time of the entire competition to date, that vaulted him into second place, just behind Felix Loch's 2:22.259. Loch was the only slider left, and his skid sealed the outcome. He's always the favorite. Adam Heidt finished fourth in 2002, Tony Benshoof was fourth in 2006, and those were as close as the Americans had ever been to the medal stand in this event.

Mazdzer's US teammates didn't fare quite as well.

"It's great for sure", Benshoof said moments after the result went final.

Mazdzer was 13th in his Olympic debut in 2010, 13th again at the Sochi Games four years ago and came into the Pyeongchang Olympics after a less-than-scintillating 18th-place showing in this season's overall World Cup standings.

It took help from team mates, friends and rivals in the close-knit luge community for Mazdzer to unlock a winning combination that would transform his sled into a chariot of glory on the hard ice track of Pyeongchang. Mazdzer could very well contend for a medal on Sunday.
