Gregor Townsend: 'Scotland were more direct and Greig Laidlaw's kicking outstanding'

Gregor Townsend: 'Scotland were more direct and Greig Laidlaw's kicking outstanding'

Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend on Thursday announced six changes to his line-up for this weekend's Six Nations match against France as they seek to recover from a dispiriting opening defeat against Wales.

Replacements: 16 Adrien Pelissie, 17 Eddy Ben Arous, 18 Cedate Gomes Sa, 19 Paul Gabrillagues, 20 Louis Picamoles, 21 Baptiste Serin, 22 Anthony Belleau, 23 Benjamin Fall.

"We've seen a response from the players in training this week and that needs to continue into and through the 80-plus minutes of the match, because France will pose a massive and immensely physical challenge". Ali came on and speeded the game up, and we were able to close it out.

"Resilience", said Townsend when asked what had impressed him the most about his side's display.

Recall: Greig Laidlaw offers control and experience at scrum-half.

France's Virimi Vakatawa, center, is tackled by Scotland's Jonny Gray during the six nations rugby match at BT Murrayfield, Edinburgh, Scotland, Sunday Feb. 11, 2018. We're just trying to get on with it.

"There's a certain expectation for the French national team to play a certain way and there's certain fundamentals in the their game", said Townsend, who spent five years as a player in the Top 14. They also compete for ball post-tackle more than other teams, so we'll need to watch out for that.

Joe Schmidt will expect his team to develop as the competition progresses and they have a good opportunity to do so with three successive home matches before a potential decider at England in the final game. We were a lot more accurate than last week but still not quite there.

"We've got to adapt to that". Every time we got the ball in the second half, we came away with points. We had expected a much better performance and there was no indicators in the build-up.

With 26 minutes on the clock, the flying wing took a feed from fullback Geoffrey Palis and chipped the ball into the Scotland in-goal area.

"We, as a coaching group, and especially the players, believe that what we showed at the weekend wasn't a true reflection of what we are capable of and what we have done throughout 2017".

"I don't think many people were expecting it and the fans are probably quite right to be a bit hacked off after a game like that, but no-one's hurting more than the players, so we need to put it right as well".

Centre Pete Horne, winger Sean Maitland and scrum-half Greig Laidlaw are all handed starting spots while Grant Gilchrist and Ryan Wilson are the players promoted from the bench to the pack.
