The Newest: Trump says 'mere allegation' can shatter lives

Trump also said, "There is no recovery for someone falsely accused".

David Sorensen, a member of the Trump administration's speechwriting team, has resigned after being accused of domestic abuse, a White House official says.

President Donald Trump on Saturday pushed back on the #MeToo movement, which urges women to speak out about sexual misconduct toward them, saying "lives are being shattered" by "mere allegations".

In his tweet, Trump referred to women's allegations about men's unwanted behavior generally and said, "Some are true and some are false".

Only later did the chief of staff, who had argued for Porter to keep his post, release a second statement in which he said he supported Porter's resignation.

President Trump told reporters that Rob Porter's departure was "very sad" and that "he did a very good job while he was in the White House". "Now, he also says he's innocent, and I think you have to remember that ... but we absolutely wish him well".

White House legislative affairs director Marc Short made similar arguments on NBC's "Meet The Press" on Sunday, after host Chuck Todd showed a highlights reel of Trump suggesting numerous allegations of sexual abuse and physical assault by powerful men against women were false.

"The Democrats sent a very political and long response memo which they knew, because of sources and methods (and more), would have to be heavily redacted, whereupon they would blame the White House for lack of transparency", Trump tweeted. Sorensen resigned Friday over allegations he had been violently and emotionally abusive to his ex-wife during their marriage.

Spokesman Raj Shah said the White House learned Thursday night about the allegations before being contacted by the media. But he has not offered to resign, according to a White House official who was not authorized to discuss personnel matters publicly and spoke Friday on condition of anonymity. "He's had a number of controversies recently".

'Donald Trump - Misogynist-in-Chief - defends the accused, not the accuser.

Wednesday, photos of Porter's first wife with a black eye came out, and Porter resigned.

Porter also denied the allegations but questions have lingered about why he was able to keep his job even after the allegations reportedly surfaced.

"The brazen and shameless way in which she has accused me of the very thing of which she is guilty and of which I am a victim has unfortunately come as no surprise to me, my family, friends, colleagues, and other mutual friends and acquaintances", he said.

The official said staffers felt misled by how Porter played down the allegations, both to Kelly and McGahn.

Later the same day Kelly suggested some of them "just should have probably gotten off the couch and signed up".

But a number of West Wing aides were shaken by Kelly's handling of the Porter accusations.

"As a brown man, who the president has, by the way, not only treated me incredibly well, but that's really besides the point", Cortes said, "he's treated my community incredibly well".

Last month, Kelly ran afoul of President Trump when in a closed-door Congressional Hispanic Caucus meeting, and then later in an interview on Fox News, he said the president's views on the border wall had "evolved".
