United States airstrikes in Deir Ezzor kills several Syrian troops

United States airstrikes in Deir Ezzor kills several Syrian troops

CNN reported Thursday that the United States is investigating whether Russian contractors, who were operating in the vicinity at the time, were involved in the attack.

The U.S. media reported that more than 100 pro-regime soldiers were killed during the attack.

No U.S. -led coalition forces were injured in the attack, but one SDF member was wounded. Roughly a battalion of pro-regime forces launched what appeared to be a coordinated attacks supported by D-30 howitzers, Soviet-era T-54 and T-72 tanks, rockets and mortars, he said.

"The incident once again demonstrated that the true aim of continued illegal deployment of US forces on the Syrian territory is no longer fighting the IS worldwide terrorist group, but seizure and retention of economic assets which belong to Syria", it said.

Although Turkey has backed opposition troops since the Syrian conflict began in 2011, Ankara has moved closer to Assad's ally, Moscow.

Channels of communication between the United States and Russian Federation were open throughout the Thursday night clash, Veale said, and the USA told Russian Federation before the attack.

The US authorities added that the Syrian government forces organized and executed an attack on the Syrian Democratic forces without any form of provocation near the Khusham town on Wednesday this week.

One official said that assessment is based on information obtained from monitoring communications in the area and from drone surveillance. "Pro-regime vehicles and personnel that were turned around and headed back west were not targeted". U.S. military personnel were at the base at the time, he said.

After the attack the coalition "conducted strikes against attacking forces to repel the act of aggression".

She stressed that the coalition strikes were purely defensive and that Washington is not seeking to fight Syrian government forces.

Following the incident, the Russian military talked to the coalition through the established communication channels, with the latter stating that Al-Isba was under the control of SDF and USA troops.

Drones were also used in the counterattack by the American forces.

Russia's Ministry of Defense indicated Thursday that the pro-regime forces had not been coordinating with Russian officials in the area. He said USA forces would remain for an indefinite period and described U.S. interests as not only defeating Islamic State, but countering an increasing Iranian presence. But the Trump administration's hope for a lessening of hostilities in Syria's larger civil war has not materialized so far, as Turkish, Russian, Iranian and other forces are brought into ever closer proximity as they vie to determine control of and pursue their own long-term interests in Syria.

The US maintains about 2,000 troops in Syria, who mostly work with the over 50,000-strong Syrian Democratic Forces, a mix of Kurdish and Arab fighters who have been the primary US-backed force fighting ISIS in Syria. That could complicate not only the U.S. -Russia relationship but also American involvement in Syria.

In June past year, a U.S. Navy jet shot down a Syrian plane after it attacked U.S. -backed fighters on the ground.
