Congress to decide fate of 1.8 million young illegal immigrants

Congress to decide fate of 1.8 million young illegal immigrants

A federal judge in NY has ruled that the Trump administration can not end the Obama-era program created to protect from deportation young immigrants brought to the United States illegally as children.

WASHINGTON | President Donald Trump warned Democrats Tuesday that it's now or never when it comes to extending protections for young immigrants living in the country illegally. Wouldn't it be great if we could finally, after so many years, solve the DACA puzzle. That means Dreamers will begin to lose their protections in larger numbers, even if they are awaiting DACA renewal because of court rulings that temporarily reopened the program.

The Senate plans to begin an open-ended debate on immigration and the fate of the "Dreamer" immigrants on Monday. That 60 vote threshhold will be hard to reach, which means Majority Leader McConnell is likely to offer the proposals as amendments.

In offering a path to citizenship for so-called Dreamers, Trump has exceeded the demands of opposition Democrats - but only in exchange for tough cutbacks on overall immigration and funding for a massive wall on the Mexican border. With Trump's insistence on the wall, the Republican Bill has proposed $25 billion for border security.

But the White House said the "gang of six" proposal doesn't offer adequate changes and has rejected it. Durbin said the bipartisan group was still deciding if they would introduce the proposal, or something similar, as an amendment.

"Nailing the president down has been next to impossible", he said. "I'm happy that Mr. Schumer sees that both parties can work together to get things done".

Immigration activists demonstrate inside the Russell Senate Office Building on Wednesday.

McConnell will need support from Democrats to get a bill across the finish line in the Senate, where he holds a majority of just 51 members.

"The path to 60 is by focusing on responding to the challenge of Dreamers and giving them a pathway to citizenship, and responding to the challenge of border security", Schumer said.

In a meeting with sheriffs at the White House, Trump continued to frame the debate in a way that depicts numerous illegal immigrants seeking to enter the risky criminals. "Rather, this is the moment for a narrow bill", the New York Democrat said.

There are several Bills that deal with the H-1B programme but one being pushed by Republican Orrin Hatch is in focus, given the Senator's proximity to the President.

Immigration is an issue that ought to be important to every American citizen. Republican leadership in both chambers has made clear they want to pass a bill that the president wants to sign - not test the veto override process.

In such a polarized environment, there is a significant chance that the Senate will pass nothing by the end of the week - or that whatever measure the Senate does adopt will be thwarted by the House. Led by Maine Republican Susan Collins, the group helped forge an end to last month's three-day partial federal shutdown. "I was skeptical. I'm defending him now - I think he's going to play it straight". "We're working on our bipartisan, common-sense coalition proposal, which I expect we will be releasing later this week". Dianne Feinstein in Los Angeles, California, Jan. 3, 2018. John Barrasso of Wyoming said. Only Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Tex., voted against launching the debate.

"There's a lot at stake here, I take it personally because this has been a big part of my Senate career", said Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) told reporters. He is trying to meet DACA recipients half way, giving them a way to stay in the U.S., but wants it done by changing the laws, not just going around them.
