Manhattan bomber sentenced to life

Manhattan bomber sentenced to life

A federal court in Manhattan sentenced Ahmad Khan Rahimi to life in prison for planting and detonating bombs in the U.S. states of NY and New Jersey in 2016, the Justice Department said in a statement on Tuesday.

A NY judge today sentenced a USA restaurant worker to life in prison following a September 2016 bombing that wounded 31 people in Manhattan's upscale Chelsea neighbourhood. He also ordered $562,803 in restitution.

He placed several other explosives nearby in New Jersey, but one failed to detonate and the other was a small pipe bomb that caused no injuries, the Justice Department announced.

The first explosion, on September 17, occurred along the route of a charity 5K race in Seaside Park, New Jersey.

Rahimi is scheduled to be sentenced on Tuesday by a federal judge in Manhattan.

"Mr. Rahimi just stood here for the last 10 minutes and blamed everyone else for his actions", Assistant U.S. Attorney Shawn Crowley said.

After speaking on the record for the first time, the Chelsea Bomber received two life sentences, plus 30 years, all to be served consecutively, for the September 2016 bombing he carried out. "My father went to the Federal Bureau of Investigation on multiple occasions". "You have no remorse".

Rahimi, 30, who formerly lived in Elizabeth, New Jersey, was caught bragging about his notoriety over a jailhouse phone during his trial, and he later sent a letter to a crony in Germany claiming that only "Allah will be my Judge".

She described Rahimi's efforts to radicalize fellow prisoners at the federal jail in NY where he has been imprisoned since his arrest.

Rahimi also allowed some inmates to view materials on his laptop or provided electronic copies as he spread "The Book of Jihad", bomb-making instructions and various issues of a propaganda magazine.

Defense attorney Xavier Donaldson said that Rahami had once aspired to be a police officer and worked as a security guard after studying criminal justice at a community college.

"I did not hear an ounce of justification", US District Judge Richard Berman.

Pauline Nelson, a mother of four who was driving near the bomb when it went off, shot Rahimi daggers as she railed against his courtroom demeanor.

The Brooklyn resident was hospitalized after the auto she was driving was rocked by the explosion. "You have no remorse for what you did".
