Off-duty police officer shot and killed in downtown Chicago

Off-duty police officer shot and killed in downtown Chicago

He had been listening to his police radio when he heard his fellow officers were chasing down a suspect.

Authorities say the officer was assisting a tactical team at the time of the shooting.

Bauer was rushed to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel released a statement, saying "the hearts of every Chicagoan are heavy as we mourn" Bauer's death.

As officers gathered at Northwestern, Johnson sent out an email to members of his department: "Today, our department suffered a tragedy that it is hard to comprehend".

See updates here from NBC's Chicago 5.

Recently, Bauer appeared in an interview on the WCIU television show "The Jam", talking about the monthly Coffee with a Commander meetings in his district.

The city saw2,785 shooting incidents affecting almost 3,500 victims in 2017, according to police statistics, along with 650 murders. Please take the time to keep his family in your thoughts and prayers.

Johnson stated that earlier Tuesday afternoon, Chicago police saw someone "acting suspiciously" who quickly fled from the tactical officers. "We just wanted to do a street stop on him and he took off on me", the first officer said over the radio, the newspaper reported.

An officer found Bauer shot in a stairwell after apprehending the suspect and recovering his firearm.

Bauer, 53, was a 31-year veteran of the department. No officer as high ranking as him has been killed since 1981 when Chicago's number two cop was murdered in a downtown bar. We will provide additional details as they come. The I-Team has learned the officer was shot twice in the head. Gugliemi said on Twitter the officer was shot by "an assailant".

Commander Bauer is survived by his wife and daughter.
