The story behind Michelle Obama's Milly portrait gown

The story behind Michelle Obama's Milly portrait gown

Also unveiled Monday was a portrait of former first lady Michelle Obama by artist Amy Sherald, who is based in Baltimore.

After being named as the artist, he became the first African-American to execute an official portrait of a president for the National Portrait Gallery.

Everyone has his/her own way to interpret a piece of art, but Sean Hannity's claim about the recently unveiled official portrait of former president Barack Obama has left many people disgusted.

The portrait gown wasn't the first time Smith had dressed Obama; Meredith Koop, the former first lady's stylist, had often reached out to Milly over the years.

Art historian Paul Staiti says the Obama portraits - full of color and unique concepts - are fresh and exciting in a field of generally staid presidential portraiture.

"I want to thank you for so spectacularly capturing the grace and beauty and intelligence and charm and hotness of the woman that I love", Obama said.

"I tried to negotiate less gray hair, but Kehinde's artistic integrity would not allow it", he added. "I tried to negotiate smaller ears", Mr. Barack Obama said.

Michelle Obama noted that she is the first person in her family to sit for a portrait. An official portrait of Michelle Obama was also revealed at the same event. Of the dress's silhouette she added, "The dress reveals her handsome shoulder and arms, which I think is very groundbreaking in a portrait of the First Lady".

"She bent down and looked at them and said, 'I painted this for you so that when you go to a museum you will see someone who looks like you on the wall, '" Moss recalled after seeing Sherald speak to young African-American girls at a gallery talk. "And I know the kind of impact that will have on their lives because I was one of those girls".

Inside of the exhibit focusing on America's Presidents, you will find George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and a lot of other portraits of presidents that look somewhat the same. He deserves the decadence and the opulence of a Kehinde Wiley painting - whose work often depicts black people with an nearly Baroque level of drama, using a lot of color to create images that turn people into heroic royalty. The dress forms a pyramid, with the face atop, in a way that suggests a protective carapace, hiding from view the first lady's body and some of her femininity, which were targets of racist attack during her tenure in the East Wing. Michelle Obama's portrait, for its part, is now hanging in a hallway for several months, after which its fate is unclear. It's true that the two look similar aesthetically, but it's far more likely that Beyoncé was influenced by Wiley's work, not the other way around. At first glance, the dress distinguishes Obama by its pattern and cut: It's a sleeveless print dress with pockets, unlike anything any of her FLOTUS predecessors wore, and evokes the same sense of approachability and sensibility that Obama communicated during her tenure.
