Woman Fell Asleep With A Headache And Woke Up With British Accent

She's gone from an American English accent to speaking with an Irish, Australian and even a British accent, local USA media reports. "I feel like a different person", Myers said while looking at videos of her speaking without the accent.

Myers, who said she also suffers from Ehlers-Danlos, a condition that makes skin elastic and joints flexible to the point of dislocation, is now seeking treatment for her rare condition, with the hope of being cured.

Myers told Fox News that doctors said her affliction was likely a side effect of a hemiplegic migraine, which produces symptoms that are similar to a stroke.

Michelle Myers, who has foreign accent syndrome, went to sleep with a headache and woke up sounding like Mary Poppins, she told Arizona's ABC15.

Michelle said: "When I was a little girl I used to always go to my mom and say, 'my bones hurt, '". The condition makes skin elastic and joints flexible to the point of dislocation, leading to the rupture of blood vessels, which is why Myers constantly has bruises on her legs. She now wonders whether her voice will ever change again.

According to the University of Texas at Dallas, FAS is a type of speech disorder that can cause a sudden change to a person's speech so that the native speaker is perceived to speak with a foreign intonation or accent.

The first time it was Irish.

People considered her a lunatic at first.

Because this is such a rare condition, treatments are also lacking. It usually accompanies a stroke, neurological damage or other underlying medical issues. "Rare diseases are very emotional". Each time, the accent lasted about a week.

As for Myers, she thinks that her Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome diagnosis triggered this unusual condition. It is possible that this might have led to Myers's unusual change in accents. "We just really want to be taken seriously and if it is something that's going to hurt me, help me", declares Myers.

"The person I am now has been through so much, compared to the person here".

On an unlucky day in 1941, at the height of World War II, a piece of shrapnel pierced the brain of a Norwegian woman known as Astrid L. The injury occurred during a raid in her German-occupied country, and when she regained consciousness, she spoke with the accent of the enemy. She said she stays positive, but she wants people to take her seriously. "I try to tell people, I'm still me".
