Airplane evacuated at John Wayne Airport after fire breaks out

Airplane evacuated at John Wayne Airport after fire breaks out

Southwest Airlines resumed operations in Chicago on Monday after the day before.

Southwest said it "proactively canceled" about 220 flights and was offering refunds or flight vouchers, WBBM-TV reported. The airline said flight 2123 was pushing back from the gate when the ground crew observed a possible fire near the rear exterior of the aircraft.

Three days after Christmas, almost 90 Southwest flights were canceled at Midway Airport because of delays caused by the de-icing of planes, according to a statement from the airline.

Southwest expects to operate a close-to-normal schedule Monday at its largest base, Chicago Midway, after canceling more than 200 flights Sunday due to difficulties with its de-icing delivery system. More than 250 flights were canceled, according to the Chicago Department of Aviation.

Southwest faced similar problems in December, the Tribune reported, when it canceled around 90 flights due to difficulties de-icing its planes. Airport officials said the smoke was caused by a fire in the auxiliary power unit.

A winter storm that dumped about 9 inches of snow on the Chicago area by Friday evening was followed by another 3 inches of snowfall Saturday night into Sunday afternoon, according to the national weather service.
