Israel military court trial closed for Palestinian protester

Israel military court trial closed for Palestinian protester

"Prisoners held on administrative detention in Zionist jails made a decision to boycott Israeli courts in a final and unprecedented manner... to protest this unjust policy", Issa Qaraqe told a press conference in the West Bank city of Ramallah.

A Palestinian teenager charged after a viral video showed her hitting two Israeli soldiers in a case that has gained global attention went on trial in military court on Tuesday in closed-door proceedings. The indictment covers six incidents in recent months in which she was involved in altercations with Israeli soldiers, including the December 15 slapping incident that was captured on video and went viral on social media.

The 17-year-old arrived at court on Tuesday appearing calm, smiling and flashing the "V for victory" sign at photographers.

Tamimi has been hailed as a hero by Palestinians who see her as bravely standing up to Israel 's occupation of the West Bank.

This prolonged ordeal continues to unfold without a decent ending in sight.

Bassem said Ahed's next appearance was set for 11 March, while Ahed's mother Nariman and cousin Nour will be brought before the military tribunal on 6 March. While only 13, Ahed opened an art exhibit in Istanbul aptly titled "Being a Child in Palestine".

Twenty-three Palestinians have been killed since Trump's declaration on December 6, a lot of them in clashes with Israeli forces. Israel's Minister of Culture, no less, Mira Regev referred to Ahed this way: "She is not a little girl, she is a terrorist".

He said the Tamimi case is not isolated, and that Israel detains and prosecutes 500 to 700 Palestinian children in military courts annually.

Tamimi's family has said that she struck the two soldiers outside her West Bank home in frustration after having just learned that Israeli troops seriously wounded a 15-year-old cousin, shooting him in the head from close range with a rubber bullet during nearby stone-throwing clashes.

Ahed Tamimi is the more aggressive of the two in the video. Meanwhile, Nariman Tamimi has been detained five times by Israeli forces for protest action. "I felt crushed", finding the incident "damaging to the honor of the military and the state of Israel".

The video stirred complaints in Israel that the soldiers had been humiliated. In contrast, Israelis enjoy the benefit of urban freedom and prosperity in an atmosphere of normalcy with relatively high levels of security in recent years that has greatly diminished the security threat, and in the process, effectively erased Palestinian grievances and aspirations from public consciousness.

"Yet again, the Israeli authorities have responded to acts of defiance by a Palestinian child with measures that are entirely disproportionate to the incident in question", Magdalena Mughrabi said.

At the time, protests had erupted in several parts of the West Bank over President Donald Trump's recognition 10 days earlier of contested Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

On 1 January, Tamimi was charged with a number of offenses under Israeli military law, some stemming from the December incident, and others dating back to last April.

"By refusing to release Ahed Tamimi since her arrest, the Israeli authorities have shown nothing but contempt for their obligations under worldwide law to protect children", said Magdalena Mughrabi from Amnesty global.

What will happen to her?

.

The clashes occurred in Nabi Saleh, the West Bank town where some 600 members of Tamimi's extended family live.

I think these polarized responses to the incident offer a defining metaphor for the current phase of Israel/Palestine relations.
