Nearly 700000 Young People Are Expected To Ditch Facebook This Year

Nearly 700000 Young People Are Expected To Ditch Facebook This Year

"The question will be whether younger users will still find Snapchat cool if more of their parents and grandparents are on it", says eMarketer principal analyst Debra Aho Williamson, "that's the predicament Facebook is in".

That's the latest from eMarketer, which on Monday released a report, already picked up by the likes of Quartz and Agence France Presse, indicating that less than half of the American internet population between ages 12 and 17 will use the social network this year, a drop from the past few years.

Facebook is still adding monthly users but older age groups are mainly responsible for this.

The number of Facebook users in their teens is expected to drop by 5.6 percent, whereas the users from 18 to 24 are expected to decrease 5.8 percent. But its new users tend to be in older age groups, eMarketer said.

Last month, Facebook announced a major overhaul of its news feed algorithm to prioritise what friends and family share, while reducing the amount of non-advertising content from publishers and brands. Out of all Facebook users, those in the 55-and-older age group make up 22.5 percent.

But outside of the main players, younger people adopted other platforms such as Musical.ly, Twitch.tv, Live.me, Line and WeChat. There is some good news for Facebook though.

The kids may think Facebook is lame, but it's doubtful that it's going anywhere. But they may be missing the point. It's a worrying development for the social media giant.

Facebook is not just losing its audience, it's losing its youth.

EMarketer also observed that "teens and tweens remaining on Facebook seem to be less engaged - logging in less frequently and spending less time on the platform".

Both Instagram and Snapchat will see a massive increase in users this year, though Instagram is expected to win out in the end. Now, though, even Instagram is becoming too much for the latest-generation of youngsters who instead see Snapchat as their main platform for social interaction and narcissistic selfie-sharing.

"Right now, Facebook won't go away", she said.

Facebook made a smart move by acquiring Instagram in 2012, allowing it to withstand the first wave of social competitors trying to penetrate the mobile photosharing market, adds Eyal, but that grace period is over.

A 5.6 percent decline in users between 12- and 17-years-old.

The anomaly could be explained by Facebook finding favour with older age groups. Snapchat will get log-ins from 43 per cent of United Kingdom social networkers in 2018, more than double the number three years ago.
